Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to contest particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
