Our Leading Release of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Number One Spot.

On the surface, this work could seem closer to an arduous university examination rather than a new pop record by an artist who just had a previous single featured a global K-pop icon. Split into four distinct parts and voiced in 13 tongues, it is a head-spinning classical-tinged album investigating female mystique, religious ascent, and corporal change, often by way of the lens of various women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme treated with grounded honesty elsewhere—soars upwards here, carried by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter among a vast list of contributors. Its sheer audacity alone makes the work of other artists look rather laughable.

Transcending Academic Pretense

The fact that Lux manages to escape dry academic chin-stroking is nothing short of a miracle, with sole praise belonging to the artist. Although it's not her first project to alchemize historical sounds and the present, the ambitions feel far greater here, with the tightrope walk more pronounced. What really raises this fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich compositions, and engrained theatricality, is a core spirit of playfulness. Similar to the legendary Björk at her peak, there is a wondrous quality to Rosalía's voice that pulls you up in its whirlwind. Even when she's tearing hearts in two, you still want to be alongside her for the journey.

A Signature Moment of Joy

This playful spirit shines brightly on the stirring piano-led ballad about a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool for several moments. Then, all the music drops silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful giggle and a comment before a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo thuds in with comedic impact. The song immediately segues into the frenetic track featuring galloping strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise role from none other than Björk.

"The magic with this album is that you rarely quite know—or even wish to know—where it is going to next."

Nearly each track finishes at a completely distinct point from where it started. One moment examines the transient nature of celebrity with a delicate symphony before collapsing in electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing her earlier trap-infused work starts out moody and brooding, with prowling beats, until fluttering traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to soften the song's rough corners.

The Balance Of Art and Pop

Another crucial achievement of Lux is straddling the line between bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is little surprise that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of key markets: its heart contains a suite of utterly undeniable hits. One track sung entirely in the English language swells around a refrain that feels to gather increasingly infectious melodies while it spins skyward. That trick gets echoed on another powerful track that expands and contracts, intertwining layered tunes like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number charms with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural impact of other breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "emotional bully".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a grand level, a hungry grasp for high artistry in an era of looming artificial sameness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic spectacle that masterfully manages its own inherent ridiculousness. It is an abundant well of buried gems that takes time to completely mine but doesn't feels like a chore. Where other major releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, this record is a lavish banquet where the guests around the table, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter from discussions about ancient figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about useless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most restlessly creative visionary.
