Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".
